The sign of the Cross of Andreas in the iris and Diabetes Mellitus: a longitudinal study.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this work was to compare the development of Diabetes Mellitus in individuals with and without the Andreas cross signal in the iris over a period of four years.
METHOD
Prospective, descriptive study with a quantitative approach. 91 patients without the disease, with and without the signal in the iris, participated in this cohort study. The follow-up was carried out by means of registers in the files.
RESULTS
At the end of the investigation, 28.2% of the group with the cross signal of Andreas was diagnosed with Diabetes and 56.5% presented two or more episodes of glucose intolerance. In the group without the signal, 4.4% were diagnosed with the disease and 24.5% had two or more episodes of glucose intolerance. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the development of the disease (p = 0.002) and glucose intolerance (p = 0.004).
CONCLUSION
The group with the cross of Andreas developed more intolerance to glucose and diabetes than the group without this signal in the iris.
